It's finally November and yet, a couple weeks ago it was almost 80 degrees outside in Philadelphia, YIKES. Fortunately, it has cooled off in the last few weeks and I can FINALLY embrace all things pumpkin spice, spooky ooky, and a whole new season of self-care. Jonathan Van Ness would surely approve, I can hear his YAS QUEEN all the way from here. To start off the holiday season, I'm going to tell you guys about some of my favorite products straight from the shelves of CVS! Let us begin.

Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15

I’ve been using this moisturizer for the past three years and let me tell you it’s a game-changer. It’s not like that’s breaking news, Aveeno daily moisturizers with SPF have grown quite the reputation for being a skincare staple especially for those of us with sensitive skin. I wear this stuff year-round, no matter what the season. The sun still shines in the Winter which means you should still be using sunscreen. The great thing about this product, however, is that it combines two-steps into one. Amen for #lifehacks.

Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes

This is another product I’ve been using forever, probably since freshman year of high school when I still had a babyface. I’ve tried other makeup wipes but for some reason, they usually end up making my face irritated and red which for a pale person such as I, is not a good look. Makeup wipes shouldn’t sting, they should only remove dirt and impurities, leave my skin alone, I’ve got products for that.

Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt: Hydrate + Repair Multi-Action Leave-In

I started using Shea Moisture products last year when my mom let me try her leave-in conditioner. Needless to say, I loved it! My dry sometimes brittle hair was saved. I recently found this specific product on the shelves of CVS which essentially does the same thing as leave-in a conditioner but it comes with a spray top which makes the process of post-shower hair care much smoother, no more wiping my hands on my face towel.

Dove Advanced Care Cool Essentials Deodorant

In regards to keeping fresh and clean, I love a good deodorant that doesn’t smell like heavy perfume which are many on the shelves of any drugstore, however, I still like to keep things fresh and what’s fresher than a cucumber? I also have to mention that I can be a sweaty gal, especially after spin class which is why I love that this deodorant has 48-hour sweat and odor protection!

Every single one of these products can be found on the shelves of a CVS near you so go take care of business girl! Make sure to join the CVS Beauty Club to get rewards back on your purchases. When you spend $30 on beauty products, you receive $3 back. We love some free money.

College is a stressful time, we’ve got exams to worry about, being broke, annoying guys, staying in shape and on top of all that it feels like we’re supposed to have everything together. College is the experience of a lifetime, but it’s also a huge source of anxiety for many of us. We are privileged to be here and to learn but it comes at a cost, as with anything. What we see in the movies isn’t real, Anna Kendrick did us a dirty one because there’s no way her character in Pitch Perfect wasn’t super duper stressed out all of the time because she was juggling so much at the time. Physically, stress has repercussions. For one, headaches, hyperventilation, and sweats. Yeah, there’s no way they’re going to put that in a Hollywood film because it ain’t pretty.

So where do we go from here? Mental health must not be ignored any further because it’s a prevalent issue in our society of perfection. Luckily, I’ve found something that works for me and I want to share it with you all. It’s called TouchPoints and I’ve been using them for the last month to de-stress, re-focus, and get better sleep. You may be asking, what exactly are TouchPoints? Well, girl, I’ll tell you. TouchPoints are essentially two bands you can wear or put anywhere on your body that vibrate to a certain rhythm depending on what you need. For example calming down after getting angry, focusing during tasks, and falling asleep easier. This is all backed by science. There’s something called “the stress switch” which turns on in response to anything that is anxiety-inducing. TouchPoints uses a patent-pending method called BLAST (bilateral alternating stimulation-tactile). Essentially, Touchpoints eliminates those excess beta waves that cause any sort of stimulation overload via rhythmic vibrations scientifically researched and calculated.

Another benefit of using these devices is that TouchPoints is a company founded by women. Specifically, Neuropsychologist Dr. Amy Serin and CEO and Child Advocate Vicki Mayo. These women wanted to know how they could help themselves and other people reduce everyday stress so they found an alternative way to do just that after researching, creating neuro-studies, and partnering with influential people in the field of neuroscience like Judith Owens who boasts an MD and MPH. She’s also a professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. I believe in the science behind TouchPoints as well as the women behind the scenes who run the company and do the scientific-based research. I’m excited to share this with you all because it’s a real game-changer for anyone who suffers from stress in their everyday lives. Why not give it a try? I did, and I find myself focusing better on those pesky homework assignments, sleeping better, and decreasing general stress when I use TouchPoints.

Every winter my skin is put through the wringer. A couple of years ago I was placed on Accutane for two years, a very powerful medication for hormonal acne. While it did heal my acne, my skin suffered the consequences. Excema would break out between my knees and elbows. I would wake up and my face would feel dry and cracked. Something needed to change. Winter can be a cold and dry season for your skin without a little help. Start with these skin care products to begin the process of rejuvenation.

Rose Water Face Toner Mist

This is one product I swear by. Not only do I feel refreshed after using it but it really helps my skin to stay moisturized while not breaking out. On a totally unrelated note, it also helps with a smoother make-up application because it keeps your skin wet. It’s pretty much a win-win. Sometimes I’ll even keep it in my school bag in case I want a little skin-refresher, clearly, I’m kind of obsessed. Apply 1-3 times a day as needed but especially in the morning before you put anything else on.

Vitamin C Serum

This serum has been a game-changer. It’s what took my skin from feeling just ok to feeling great. Sort of like drinking a big glass of orange juice on a winter morning this serum is like food for your skin. There are a lot of different options to choose from but being the broke-college girl I am, I picked out a few cheaper options on Amazon. Apply once in the morning after toning mist.

Moisturizer w/SPF

This one is really important. Obviously, you will need to apply actual moisturizer lotion in the winter but make sure that it also comes with a healthy dose of SPF. The winter sunshine can be harsh on your skin even if it doesn’t feel like it. It’s important to apply SPF to your face every day. There is one product I swear by that you can get at any drugstore or Amazon: Aveeno ultra-calming daily moisturizer with SPF 15. Thank me later. Apply once in the morning after vitamin C serum has been applied.

Spotstick

Just because your skin is dry, doesn’t mean it won’t break out. I know this from experience. This is why it’s important to find a spot stick that works to heal those little red bumps that occasionally appear on your skin. It’s called a spot stick for a reason. It dries out the exact area you apply it to so use wisely! The spot stick I’ve linked above works like magic. Apply in the evening in the second step to your nighttime skincare routine the first being a cleanser of your choice.

Calming Serum

To continue your nighttime routine apply a serum with blue tansy oil to both renew your skin for the next day and fight off any acne. Blue tansy is the key ingredient. Because this is an oil-based serum, it’s the only thing I put on my face after the spot stick. Unless you’re on Accutane make sure the product does not contain coconut oil. Apply before bed and after the spot stick.

Dry Eye Relief Drops

So, this product is not really a skin product but it does wonders for making me feel more awake in the morning. My eyes get dry both in the winter and the fall which can actually impact my vision during the day (that’s how dry they get). It’s pretty much like lube for your eyes. That sounds so wrong but I promise you it will feel right when you try it.

Final Note

Winter can be a harsh time both mentally and physically for all of us who lead busy lives trying to achieve good grades all the while having a life at the same time. If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with your skin and I promise that you will feel better. Dry skin makes us tired and grumpy so lather on that moisturizer and go kick some ass!
